WHY IMPAIRED DRIVERS ARE SO DANGEROUS

WHY IMPAIRED DRIVERS ARE SO DANGEROUS

Over 10 thousand people die every year in drunk driving-related accidents, with many of these fatalities occurring in Maryland. Law enforcement has made tackling these issues a priority, but they cannot prevent every accident caused by impaired driving.

There are many myths in circulation about drunk driving. Some claim that they can drive just fine after a few drinks. But, the truth is, alcohol impairs driving capabilities, and here’s why;

BEHAVIORAL IMPACTS

Many of us have been reminded in the morning by friends of our behavior the night before. Often, this refers to funny or embarrassing incidents. What stands out though, is that people behave in ways that they would not have if they hadn’t been drinking.

This can apply to driving too. Driving is a serious activity that requires a lot of focus and concentration. The truth is that an individual just doesn’t have the capacity to make sensible decisions when they are under the influence.

THE IMPACT ON MOTOR SKILLS

When a person has been pulled over by the police for suspected drunk driving, they will be asked to perform field sobriety tests. These tests are designed to assess the coordination and motor skills of the driver.

You’ve probably seen this on TV before.  Alcohol is known to have an effect on an individual’s balance and ability to communicate. If a person cannot stand up or walk in a straight line, then they are in no condition to operate a vehicle and they are much more likely to crash into you.

YOUR RIGHTS IF YOU’VE BEEN INJURED Impaired driving is not only a criminal offense, but it also constitutes a negligent act. If you have been injured by someone who was drunk behind the wheel, then you may be entitled to financial compensation. Seek some legal guidance to find out more about your options.
