COULD YOUR SHOULDER INJURY BE SERIOUS?

Road traffic collisions can be devastating for everyone involved. The impacts of a collision are felt more if there are injuries.

It’s not uncommon for the shoulders to be injured during a crash.  Are shoulder injuries serious?

WHEN BONES ARE FRACTURED

During a crash, your clavicle (collarbone) and humerus are particularly exposed. If the force generated during the collision is significant, these bones might be fractured. On top of being extremely painful, the recovery period for such injuries can be extended. In the most severe cases, multiple surgeries may be required to fix the damage.

WAS THE JOINT DISLOCATED?

A dislocation occurs when the shoulder joint pops out of its socket. If you notice pain and swelling in your shoulder after a collision, then it’s vital to seek medical treatment immediately. Importantly, the symptoms don’t always present themselves as pain. Numbness down the shoulder and arm could also be a sign that your shoulder has been dislocated.

MUSCLE DAMAGE

Your shoulder comprises various muscle groups, most notably the rotator cuff. This group of muscles is utilized in almost every action you do with your arms. If it’s damaged in a crash, then you’ll be restricted in terms of what you can do day-to-day. If you hear unusual cracking sounds as you try to move or lift items, this could be a sign of a damaged rotator cuff.

If the negligent driving of another road user has caused you physical and emotional suffering, you may be entitled to legal compensation. The best way to review your options is to contact someone with experience in the field of personal injury.
